General
What's the meaning behind “Conexizan”?

The name is formed from “Conex”, which can stand for a connection between two or more people, and “izan”, which was taken from the word partisan. Partisan stands for the armed freedom fighters outside of a regular national army.

From this, one can understand that “Conexizan” stands for the connection between freedom fighters or party supporters. We wanted to bring it into relation with the rejection of proprietary communication services by state or monopolist corporations and the fight against capitalism.

What's the reason for the creation of this project?

For many months, we as the Vormrodian Projects are spectating the activities of internet monopolies and companies, which provide the most used communication services (as it is known, phone apps such as WhatsApp are meant) and abuse the data of their users for profits, disturb their privacy and collect critical metadata like location and device information. This mostly happens unlawfully and we are totally unsatisfied about the transformation of users into products. Due to the source-code of those services being proprietary, the end-to-end-encryption of messages can not be proven by the users themselves, which makes having to trust these companies necessary in order to assume that there are no insecure backdoors and that message encryption is actually in place.

Due to WhatsApp et al. obviously having become an open hole of grabbing user data for third-parties and state apparatuses and the problem relying on trusting these capitalist companies, we want to forward people to decentralized and open-source alternatives by providing such an alternative, an XMPP server, ourselves. Decentralized in this context means that every person can set up their own service of a software and they don‘t have to trust any companies. Open-source means that the code of these softwares can be looked into transparently and therefore one can develope these softwares together with volunteers and safely assume those are secure.

XMPP? What is that?

XMPP stands for eXtensible Messaging Presence Protocol and is the standardized protocol for real-time communication.
The protocol is open-source, free to use and builds the core for chatting services like WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram and also for push notifications like for instance on Apple devices.
So-called XMPP servers are platforms of the protocol that are federated with each other, which can be set up through various server software. With the extensibility that the protocol makes possible, anyone can set up a server based on their own interests and needs. Thus, some for example care about anonymity, others about privacy (just like us).

It works similar to E-Mail: One chooses one of the multitude of providers, creates an account (with an address like emailaccount@example.com) and is then able to write mails, which users of other E-Mail providers can also receive.

Why does the project exclude some people and groups?

In our terms of service, we explain that the following people, groups and similar are not allowed onto our platform:
Fascists, Officials of a nation state or a government, aristocrats, lobbyists, capitalists as well as members of interior or exterior secret agencies.

The reason for this is that we as antifascists ourselves do not want to provide a space for reactionary activities, for fascists having the goal of splitting up humans through hate speech against foreigners, discrimination of minorities and oppression of opinions in mind. By this, they want to plant their racist and chauvinist fantasies into the minds of the working class.
This project won't be provided to officials of a state or a government, that means of entire governmental parties and state-level positions either, as they represent the capitalist system and assist in the exploitation of workers.
The same applies for aristocrats, lobbyists and capitalists, that means entire owners of private means of production as well as their representants. Secret agencies do not have to benefit from the security our project provides when they're trying to undermine that at the same time.

It may be difficult for us to detect violations of our terms of service immediately as such people won't be identifiable at first due to message encryption, however, with the data provided to the public by unwanted users themselves and reports from our users, this won't be impossible either.

I've detected a fascist during a conversation. Where do I report them?

Gutes Auge, Genosse!
Good eye, comrade!
For this matter, please go onto the contact page and read the tutorial for a proper composition of a report against a user. This does not only apply to fascists, some other people or activities are also prohibited from using our service based on our terms of service.

Technical
I've registered myself on here, but what's next?

As soon as you was able to create an account over our registration page, it's time for the installation of a client software. These are differing based on the operating system and we have recommended some on our homepage.

After you installed a client, you will see a welcome screen on it, where you can enter your login credentials. At first, you enter your Jabber ID (repeated example: ownname@conexizan.de), then your password. Afterwards, you can edit your profile with for instance a profile picture.

Why can I not login to my account anymore?

If there are difficulties during the login process on your client, then it might be that there is an on-going maintenance on the server. For this, you should pay attention to the server notes.

Otherwise, it can be the case that you violated our terms of service and we have deactivated or deleted your account. In such a case, you won't be informed, for who does not take the effort of adhering to the terms of service has not to expect from us that we would inform them.

What should I do if I lose or forget my password?

Unfortunately, we do not provide a way of password resetting in case of password loss, which is the reason you don't have to enter an additional E-Mail address or a phone number during the registration.
If you forgot your password, then you must create a new account.
In case you do have your password and just wish to change it, this can be done over your client.

How does one even encrypt text, voice or media messages?

If you use one of the recommended clients from the homepage, then you can encrypt your messages and files (like pictures and videos) via OMEMO.
OMEMO is based on the known Signal protocol and is a multifunctional encryption method, where you don't trust the identity of a user but the identity of the devices, on which they are logged in. Those are marked with a so-called fingerprint, a specific string of characters, as identifiers and you can decide, which devices you want to make the encrypted messages visible.
For example, in case one of the devices of your contact has been seized or hacked, then you can deactivate the OMEMO key of that device for the encryption of messages over the contact's profile.

On every modern client, OMEMO is usually activated as the main method and it can also be activated manually over a lock symbol. That's how easy it works!
Other than OMEMO, there is also OpenPGP as an encryption method, which is a bit more complicated for real-time communication but on the other hand, it's established as a method for decades, and there's also OTR, which however only works, when both users are online at the same time. The latter is not (being) supported by more modern clients anymore.

The use of encryption methods is strictly recommended on our server. In public rooms or groups, message encryption is not possible (in private groups, however, it is).

How do I prevent receiving spam messages?

In order to prevent spam over private messages, we recommend you to treat your Jabber ID the same as a private phone number or a personal E-Mail address and not to publish it on the internet, if there is no purpose for that.
Otherwise, we recommend to report the spam accounts to us and to block such. More and more spam is often related to low or poor moderation by other XMPP servers.

If you‘re receiving spam in your public groups (MUCs which are free to access for everyone), then we recommend the following regulation:

  • Your group is set as "not moderated" by default. Change this setting to "moderated". By this, new participants will only receive the read-only permission (and not the permission to write messages) until you as the group administrator or moderator grant them the member status.

  • How can I call somebody?

Currently, calling is only possible from person to person via XMPP and not with multiple participants at once, as it lacks the client-based support for that.
If no option for making an audio or video call is being shown on your client, then this can be due to multiple factors:

  • If you're trying to call a person, where neither of you saved each other as a contact, then the option to make calls can be missing, when your client only supports it for contacts.
  • In the rarest case, it can be that your client doesn't support calling, yet this only affects one of the clients we recommend (as of January 2026, that is Gajim)
  • It can also be that you can not make a call with a user, when they are registered on an XMPP server that does not have the necessary (STUN/TURN) server for calls configured According to the compliance site for compatibility tests of XMPP servers, only 67% in all XMPP servers have configured a server for calls (as of January 2026)
  • Such a problem can also originate from our server. For this, we ask you to report the problem in the official support channel for Conexizan.

  • Will my Jabber ID become reusable after an account deletion?

Yes. If you don't want to have the account anymore and delete it from the server over your client, then the Jabber ID is going to be available for new registrations. Strangers then could take over your available name, which poses the danger of such strangers impersonating you.

If that's not what you want, then we recommend you to leave every group channel, inform your contacts about your exit from Conexizan and delete them from your contact list afterwards, clear your vCard (profile information like a profile picture) and log out of the account at last. By this, you have the possibility of changing your mind at any time or to keep your Jabber ID reserved.
